Police and Crime Residents Survey

In 2019/20, the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester Baroness Bev Hughes commissioned an ongoing large-scale quarterly independent survey of nearly 13,000 Greater Manchester residents per year, one of the largest surveys of its kind in the UK. The survey provides valuable insight about how residents feel about where they live.

The survey has produced a rich new source of intelligence available to public sector partners across the city region, and captured information previously unavailable elsewhere on people’s experience of crime, feelings of safety, satisfaction with local services, and sense of belonging and community. The next 12 months will focus on how we use this growing source of information to make the best use of our resources.

Headlines for the first 12 months data

12,875 Greater Manchester residents have completed our Police and Crime Residents survey.

88% say that they feel “very” or “fairly safe” in their local area, when we asked why the top three reasons given for feeling safe were:

23% of respondents said that they’d had no personal experience of problems
23% of respondents said that they lived in a nice or quiet area
18% made reference to a strong community spirit or having good / friendly neighbours

11% of respondents said that they felt “fairly” or “very unsafe” in their local area. The top reasons given for feeling unsafe were:

40% said that they were aware of anti-social behaviour in their local area
30% said that they were aware of crime in their local area
11% made reference to a lack of police presence making them feel unsafe
