Planning and housing

Creating homes and better places to live and work

We’re freeing up good-quality land, and making it easier for developers and investors to build new homes and to offer new jobs - helping create environments where people want to live and work.

We will help property owners deal with empty homes, revitalise our town centres, and get people connected through better road, rail and tram networks.

And we'll make the most of what our unique area already has going for it: like the vibrant city centre, our busy international airport, and the outstanding surrounding countryside.

Building homes

We know that Greater Manchester needs more, good quality homes. We’re working hard to identify suitable land and attract developers and investors to build the homes we need.

Dealing with empty homes

Empty homes deteriorate rapidly and become targets for vandalism and crime. Around 12,000 Greater Manchester homes have been empty for several months or more. We want to bring them all back into use.

Improving infrastructure

A city-region needs excellent infrastructure to make it an attractive place to live, work and invest in.

Revitalising town centres

Our town centres are at the heart of our communities. But they are facing serious challenges.

Greater Manchester Spatial Framework

The Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) will ensure that we have the right land in the right places to deliver the homes and jobs we need up to 2035.
