Manchester has rebranded as Womanchester to mark International Women’s Day (March 8) and remind the world that it is the birthplace of innovation and progress.
Part of the #RadicalManchester campaign from Marketing Manchester, the 24-hour rebrand is in recognition of the city’s role in the fight for women’s suffrage and innovations across business sectors, science, health, arts, culture and sport.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has given his full support to the campaign, showing once again his willingness to make Greater Manchester an area of innovative firsts.
A key part of making Greater Manchester gender inclusive has been ensuring that the 14 portfolio areas, the key priorities of the Authority, have a 50/50 split between male and female leads.
Speaking about the importance of International Women’s Day, Andy said: “It’s right to change the branding of our city to reflect its role in the fight for equality and justice.
“Obviously there are new battles that we need to fight, such as reducing the gender pay gap and helping women to reach senior positions.
“Greater Manchester is going to ensure that it remains at the forefront of equality and justice.”
