Building Homes

We know that Greater Manchester needs more, good quality homes. We’re working hard to identify suitable land and attract developers and investors to build the homes we need.

But since the housing market crashed in 2008, it's been hard for home buyers to get a mortgage and for developers to find funding. Last year we built around 9,000 new homes, the largest number since the crash but far fewer than we need.

Our ‘GM Place’ initiative with the government's Homes and Communities Agency is our strategic approach to accelerating the pace of new homebuilding. It's a link to the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework and finance opportunities like the new Greater Manchester Housing Fund.
