About
Mark (external website) has lived in Stockport for more than 30 years. Initially elected to the Council in 1996 as a member for North Marple, he became its first full-time leader in 2002. During his three-year leadership, he drove the ‘cleaner, greener, safer, stronger’ strategy, to bring a sharper focus to local services.
Mark was elected to Parliament in 2005 and served as MP for Cheadle for 10 years, always championing the needs of his constituents and local community.
He was re-elected to Stockport Council in 2017 and 2021 as a councillor for Cheadle Hulme South, where he lives, and became Leader of the Council again in May 2022. He holds the portfolio for Children & Young People for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Ambitious for Stockport, Mark believes the borough has enormous potential and pledges to work with all those who share his determination to make it an even better place to live and work.
Mark is married and has two grown up children, only one of whom shares his passion for politics. He is a keen reader and committed supporter of Manchester City, who he has followed through thick and thin for 50 years. He is also an enthusiastic advocate for Stockport County and delighted by their return to the Football League.
