Mayor leads Greater Manchester remembrance ceremony for Brussels

Interim Greater Manchester Mayor Tony Lloyd today hosted a ceremony to remember the victims of yesterday’s Brussels terrorist attacks.

On behalf of Greater Manchester, Tony Lloyd hosted a minute’s silence and lowered a flag, alongside the region’s Chief Fire Officer Peter O’Reilly, at the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Training Centre in remembrance of victims of the Brussels attack.    

The event took place at 11am to coincide with remembrance events taking place in Belgium.  

The Interim GM Mayor also wrote to the Mayor of Brussels extending the city-region’s condolences and expressing solidarity following the atrocities. 

Interim Greater Manchester Mayor Tony Lloyd said: “Yesterday was a dark day for Brussels and for the whole of Europe. Today I have extended our sympathies to the Mayor of Brussels following these horrific attacks and expressed our solidarity with the people of Brussels. 

“Greater Manchester stands together with Brussels and united against the poisonous ideology of the terrorists. Yesterday they attacked our way of life but they will never triumph. Together we will defeat this evil.”
