ESPRESSO - Tax and Expenditure tool

Background

In early 2013, New Economy (now the GMCA Research Team) conducted research into the the total tax generated, and the total public sector expenditure, in Greater Manchester. This analysis formed the basis of a larger piece of work commissioned by the Local Government Association in 2015 to look at the UK as a whole.

The tool developed in 2015 examined total expenditure by the public sector and total tax generated, per UK local authority district area. The aim of the project was to provide a single, consistent tool that shows each local authority district’s reliance on HM Treasury.

The ESPRESSO tool has since been updated with three years of data. We have provided this as a Tableau tool, allowing you to view some of the data in more detail than the original set of pivot tables.

We are working on an update to the ESPRESSO tool to add further information across a number of years.
