Modern policing wrestles with ethical dilemmas every day. Could you play a part in helping the police negotiate challenging, complex and sometimes controversial issues by joining Greater Manchester’s Independent Police Ethics Committee?

If you have a passion to help public bodies do the right thing, and a desire to make a difference, then joining Greater Manchester's Independent Police Ethics Committee could be the ideal opportunity for you.

We are committed to ensuring that the committee is representative of Greater Manchester’s geography and diversity, as well as having a gender balance. We would therefore be particularly keen to hear from people from black and ethnic minority communities, and LGBT communities.

Length of term and allowances

The length of term for committee members is two years.

Members receive an allowance of £1,000, and an attendance allowance of £211.50 per day or £104.50 per half day, along with reasonable expenses. This allowance is in line with Home Office guidance.

Knowledge and experience

Applicants should demonstrate relevant qualifications and/or proven experience that enable them to contribute informed perspectives on complex ethical issues. Ideal candidates will bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Policing and Criminal Law
  • Legal Practice
  • Media and Communications
  • Applied Ethics
  • Health and Social Care (e.g., NHS)
  • Business and Commerce
  • Public Accountability
  • Community service, partnership working, or voluntary engagement within Greater Manchester

Additional requirements

  • A sound understanding of ethical principles and their application within the policing context
  • Active involvement in a professional or voluntary field where ethics is a core consideration
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to contribute constructively to discussions
  • Willingness to attend scheduled meetings and participate in additional work outside of formal sessions

Desirable criteria

  • Previous or current membership of a group or organisation where ethical considerations are central to its work or decision-making
  • Experience in community engagement, project delivery, or participation in advisory groups within either the private or voluntary sectors
