Councillor Gerald (Ged) Cooney (external website) became the seventh council-leader in Tameside Council’s 48-year history when he was elected on May 24, and is the Greater Manchester Combined Authority portfolio lead for Housing.

Born in Manchester in 1958, Councillor Cooney was educated at St Ignatius School and later worked for the city council as a joiner. He was elected to Tameside Council in 1990, three years after becoming a branch secretary for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT). He has been a Labour member for the Droylsden West ward ever since.

Councillor Cooney has served Tameside in many roles including cabinet secretary; as a member of the policy, social services and housing committees; armed forces champion; executive member for learning; and as chair of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund’s local initiatives venture capital working group.

Most recently he was executive member for housing, planning and employment.

Married with three sons, Councillor Cooney lives in Droylsden, where he attends St Stephen’s RC Church. He lists his interests as sport, reading and travel. He is a committed runner and supporter of Manchester United.
